The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s best-known safari destination, and its reputation is earned: exceptional year-round game viewing, reliable Big Five sightings, and, from roughly July to October, the Great Wildebeest Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti into the Mara. The Mara River crossings, herds pushing through crocodile-filled water, are among the most dramatic wildlife scenes anywhere in Africa.

Outside migration season, the Mara still delivers: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, black rhino, and over 500 recorded bird species live here year-round, and a hot air balloon safari at sunrise followed by a champagne bush breakfast is one of the reserve’s signature experiences. January to March offers warm, clear conditions and strong game viewing outside peak migration crowds, April to June is the quieter, greener low season, and November to December brings short rains and excellent birdwatching. Most visitors spend two to four days here, reachable by a five to six hour road transfer from Nairobi or a roughly one-hour scheduled flight into one of the Mara’s airstrips.
