Lake Manyara National Park sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania, covering around 330 square kilometres, much of it occupied by the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara itself. It’s smaller and more compact than its Northern Circuit neighbours, but packs in an unusual range of habitats, groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland, and hot springs, within a single park.
Manyara’s best-known claim is its tree-climbing lions, a rare and unpredictable behaviour that has made the park a favourite among wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, though sightings are never guaranteed. Large elephant herds, leopard, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, and more than 400 recorded bird species, including flamingos and African fish eagles around the lake, fill out the wildlife, and the Maji Moto hot springs offer an easy scenic stop along the way.
June to October is the dry season and best for wildlife viewing, January to March brings pleasant weather good for photography, and November to December adds lush green scenery and strong birdwatching. A full day or single overnight is typically enough, and Manyara is almost always combined with Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti as part of a Northern Circuit safari, about a two-hour drive from Arusha.
Esther Luxe Safaris includes Lake Manyara in combined Tanzania safari itineraries alongside its Northern Circuit neighbours.
Accommodation sits mostly outside the park along the Rift Valley escarpment, ranging from lodges with lake views to simpler tented options, and Esther Luxe Safaris typically schedules Manyara as a single day within a longer Northern Circuit route rather than a multi-night stop.
