Ol Pejeta Conservancy sits between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, roughly 220km and a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive from Nairobi. Covering about 360 square kilometres, it’s smaller than Kenya’s major national parks, but it holds one distinction none of them can match: it’s home to the largest black rhino population in East Africa and the country’s only sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees.
Game drives here turn up lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, both black and white rhino, and more than 300 recorded bird species, all within a conservancy built explicitly around conservation work rather than just wildlife viewing. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the standout addition, giving visitors a rare chance to see chimps in Kenya at all, alongside rhino tracking experiences that put conservation front and centre.
Ol Pejeta is a year-round destination, with June to October offering the best dry-season game viewing, January to March bringing sunny, clear conditions, and April to May turning the conservancy green with fewer visitors around. Accommodation ranges from luxury lodges to family-friendly camps, all bookable through Esther Luxe Safaris alongside a tailored itinerary.
Its central Kenya location makes Ol Pejeta easy to combine with Samburu to the north or a broader multi-park Kenya safari circuit.
Because Ol Pejeta sits roughly midway between Nairobi and Samburu, it also works well as a natural stopover on a longer northern Kenya itinerary rather than a there-and-back day trip, letting you break up the drive with rhino tracking and a chimpanzee sanctuary visit along the way.
