Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park covers around 9,000 square kilometres between Nairobi and Mombasa, and trades Tsavo East’s flat open plains for something more varied: volcanic hills, lava flows, and one of Kenya’s most memorable natural features, Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground and can be viewed at eye level with hippos and crocodiles through an underwater observation window.

The park’s Rhino Sanctuary protects one of Kenya’s endangered black rhino populations, and the Shetani Lava Flow, a stark black volcanic field from a relatively recent eruption, adds a geological curiosity most safari parks don’t have. Elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, and more than 600 recorded bird species round out the wildlife, and the Chyulu Hills on the park’s edge offer sweeping views toward Mount Kilimanjaro.

June to October is the driest and best for game viewing, January to March brings clear skies good for photography, and April to May is quieter and greener. Two to three days is enough to see the park’s main areas, and it’s commonly paired with Tsavo East as a single combined circuit.

Tsavo West is reachable by road from both Nairobi and Mombasa, or by domestic flight to a nearby airstrip, and Esther Luxe Safaris builds it into both inland safari itineraries and safari-and-beach combinations.
