Samburu National Reserve, roughly 350km and a five to six hour drive north of Nairobi, offers a noticeably different safari from Kenya’s better-known southern parks. Its dry, rugged landscape along the Ewaso Ng’iro River supports the Samburu Special Five, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, and gerenuk, species found almost nowhere else in the country.
Beyond the Special Five, Samburu holds healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, and buffalo, with more than 450 recorded bird species along the riverine woodland. A visit to a Samburu village adds a cultural layer many southern-circuit parks don’t offer, an introduction to the traditions, music, and daily life of the Samburu people who share this landscape with the wildlife.
The reserve is a strong year-round destination: June to October is the dry-season peak for game viewing, January to March brings sunny, clear conditions ideal for photography, and April to May is quieter and greener. Two to three days is typically enough to cover the main game-viewing areas and include a cultural visit.
Esther Luxe Safaris reaches Samburu by road or short domestic flight, and often pairs it with Ol Pejeta Conservancy for travellers wanting a fuller central and northern Kenya safari.
Lodges here tend to be smaller and more intimate than in Kenya’s busier southern parks, reflecting Samburu’s lower visitor numbers, and Esther Luxe Safaris can pair a Samburu stay with Ol Pejeta or a broader northern Kenya circuit for travellers with more time.
