Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, a short drive from Nairobi, and one of the easiest ways to combine wildlife with a genuinely relaxing day out. A boat safari across the lake brings you close to pods of hippo and a long list of resident water birds, gliding quietly along the papyrus-lined shoreline rather than bouncing through a game drive.
The lake’s other highlight is Crescent Island, a private wildlife sanctuary where visitors walk freely among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and other plains game, since the island holds no dangerous predators. It’s one of the few places in Kenya offering a genuine walking safari, and pairs naturally with the boat ride as a single half-day outing.
Naivasha works well as a standalone day trip from Nairobi or as a stop en route to Lake Nakuru or the Maasai Mara, breaking up longer road transfers with an easy, low-effort wildlife experience. Its scenery, open water framed by Rift Valley escarpment, also makes it a strong stop for photographers.
Esther Luxe Safaris runs Naivasha as a private day trip from Nairobi, usually combined with Hell’s Gate National Park next door.
Lodges and campsites sit right along the lakeshore, making it easy to combine an early boat safari with breakfast before continuing on toward Nakuru or the Mara, and Esther Luxe Safaris typically books Naivasha as a single overnight or day-trip stop rather than a longer stay.
