Hell's Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park sits near Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, about a two-hour drive from Nairobi, and offers a genuinely different kind of park experience. Rather than restricting visitors to vehicles, Hell’s Gate allows walking and cycling among the wildlife, since it holds no predators large enough to pose a serious threat, making it one of the few parks in Kenya you can explore on foot or by bike.

The landscape is the real draw: towering cliffs, volcanic rock towers, a narrow gorge, and geothermal steam vents scattered across open grassland, scenery striking enough that it’s said to have influenced scenes in Disney’s The Lion King. Wildlife includes buffalo, zebra, giraffe, eland, and Thomson’s gazelle, alongside strong birdlife such as Verreaux’s eagles and augur buzzards riding the thermals above the cliffs.

Hell’s Gate works well as a half-day or full-day trip and pairs naturally with Lake Naivasha, whose boat rides among hippos sit just a few minutes away. June to October brings the driest, easiest walking conditions, while January to March offers warm, clear days; the short rains around November and December bring green scenery and good birdwatching.
