Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world bordering a capital city, sitting just 7km from Nairobi’s centre. Despite that proximity, it delivers a genuine safari: open grassland and acacia woodland home to lion, both black and white rhino, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and hippo, with the city’s skyline visible in the background of almost every game drive.

The park’s rhino population is one of its strongest draws, and the Ivory Burning Site Monument, marking where Kenya publicly destroyed confiscated ivory stockpiles, adds a conservation history stop most first-time visitors don’t expect. More than 500 recorded bird species round out the park’s appeal for birdwatchers, and morning game drives offer the best chance at active predators and cooler temperatures.

The one animal missing here is elephant, so travellers hoping for a full Big Five sighting will need a second park. A half-day or full-day visit is typical, and its location, 20 to 30 minutes from both the city centre and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, makes it ideal for stopovers, layovers, or the start or end of a longer Kenya itinerary.
